A Life in Bloom

"Those who are planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of our God." — Psalm 92:13

Like a beautiful garden touched by God’s own hand, the life of Gladys Christine Leverett Jones blossomed with grace, love, and quiet strength.

Gladys was born on April 22, 1939, in Columbia County, Georgia, to the late Turner Leverett, Sr. and the late Ana Burns Leverett. She was the sixth of eight children, planted in a family rooted in love and nurtured with care. On Sunday, April 26, 2026, she peacefully transitioned from this earthly garden to her eternal home at Piedmont Augusta Hospital in Augusta, Georgia.

"The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want… He restoreth my soul." — Psalm 23:1,3

At an early age, Gladys accepted Christ as her personal Savior and became a faithful member of Canaan of Galilee Baptist Church in Appling, Georgia. Her faith was the rich soil that sustained her life and allowed her spirit to flourish.

Educated in the Columbia County School System, Gladys graduated and soon after spread her wings, relocating to California in 1958. That same year, she united in holy matrimony with the love of her life, Fred Jones. From their union, one precious son, David, was born—a living testament to their love. In 1986, Gladys returned to Georgia, lovingly tending to her mother in her time of need.

"To everything there is a season… a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted." — Ecclesiastes 3:1-2

Gladys was a woman of dedication and service. She worked faithfully for over 30 years in the SPD Department at the VA Hospital, retiring in 2021. She also served as a bus monitor with the Columbia County School District until 2019, and later as a greeter at Walmart, where her warm smile became a familiar and comforting sight to many. Wherever she went, she planted seeds of kindness that will continue to bloom in the hearts of those she encountered.

Her life was enriched by the simple joys she cherished—reading books on healing and the Word of God, traveling, dining out, listening to gospel music, and expressing herself through her love for fashion. She carried herself with elegance, always dressed as beautifully as the flowers she so effortlessly resembled.

"I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith." — 2 Timothy 4:7

Gladys was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Fred Jones; her parents; her siblings, Mattie Lee, Ola, Rosana, Turner Jr., Ollie, Claude, and Theodore; and her half-siblings, Ruby and Sonny.

Though her earthly garden now rests, the seeds she planted continue to grow.

"And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death…" — Revelation 21:4

She leaves to cherish her memory her loving and devoted son, David Lamar Jones; three special nieces, Delois Leverett, Gwen Weeks, and LaQuisha Leverett; five sisters-in-law; four brothers-in-law; three special friends, Glenda Blackburn, Ola Bell Murray, and Mary Jenkins; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

Her life was a garden of love, her memory a bouquet we will forever hold close.
